We are delighted to announce that the Fernet-Branca Foundation, located in Saint-Louis, reopened its doors on April 12, 2024, after several months of renovation. This resumption of operation coincides with our 20th anniversary, marking a significant milestone in our history. To celebrate both occasions, we had the pleasure of inaugurating our new exhibition, Splendore – joy, joy, joy…. This exhibition explores the topic of joy through the works of contemporary artists who all see the night, dreams, and states of semi-consciousness as possible extensions of reality. Joy—both protective, rebellious, and liberating—is at the heart of this exhibition, which promises to be an immersive and inspiring experience for our visitors.
Housed in a former distillery, the Fernet-Branca Foundation continues to offer 1,500 m² of space dedicated to contemporary art. Renovation work became necessary after storm damage exposed leaks in the roof. We took this opportunity to modernize the venue, including the outdoor courtyard, while preserving the building’s industrial character. This transformation aims to enhance the overall visitor experience.
Alongside the reopening, we are also announcing a change in the foundation’s executive board. This transition marks the beginning of a new era for our foundation, with fresh artistic and cultural directions. Our new president, Martine Zimmermann, is expected to bring a renewed and dynamic vision to the institution.
We are currently preparing another major exhibition for 2024. From September 14, 2024, to February 2, 2025, we will present L’Œuvre Messagier. An Abstract Mimesis of the World, an exhibition commemorating the 25th anniversary of the death of French painter Jean Messagier. Curated by Bernard Ceysson and Arlette Klein, this exhibition will highlight the singular and influential work of the artist.
In summary, the reopening of the Fernet-Branca Foundation, combined with a change in leadership, marks a pivotal moment for our contemporary art space. With promising exhibitions and a newly renovated venue, we are reaffirming our position in the local, regional and trinational contemporary art scene.
